This existing bungalow required a makeover and complete re-design of the internal spaces and layout. With the help of a small 6.5 sq.m extension we opened the living, kitchen and dining spaces, flooded them with light and took advantage of the views of the beautiful harbour at Glandore.
At the other end of the house we converted a garage to include for a master bedroom with an en-suite. Windows and insulation were upgraded along with a new gas fired central heating system being installed.
Key features in this design were a large island connecting the old with the new, A walnut sliding pocket door to allow for flexibility in the open plan spaces and standing seam zinc cladding to new extension externally.

This existing rural farmhouse type building needed to be brought to life. The owners had an expanding family and needed additional space and more efficient use of the space already available to them. We designed a revised layout to include extensions that complement the existing structure and provided natural day light into key areas of the dwelling. Given the brief on this design build, the budget on this project was quite tight but the overall result maximised value for money on the project.

This dwelling was a really interesting design to be involved in and brought us into a rare realm of New England type Architecture. The brief here was to upgrade the home, create some additional space, make better use of the existing space with regard to natural light in kitchen and living areas along with creating a better flow between spaces. All with the New England style in mind. The results of plastering over existing quoins and the introduction of timber cladding with an American style deck work well to achieve the New England look.

The owners of this dwelling approached CBA Architects based on seeing some of our work around Cork and on seeing an article in the Cork Examiner on a dwelling designed for a client in Tipperary.
The clients asked CBA Architects to re-design their existing Cork based home, to transform it both inside and out and to include an extension to incorporate an open plan living space for the family.
A key feature in the open plan kitchen/living dining area is the sunken living space giving it a true sense of definition within the overall space.
Other key features in this dwelling are the kitchen design and its finish, along with the bespoke open thread staircase with glass balustrade and polished stainless steel handrail, which is a standout element in the entrance hall and sets the tone for what’s to come in this Cork suburban home.

This retired butcher’s shop, in Kildorerry, North Cork, had character and its owners knew it too. When they went about looking for an Architect they found CBA Architects as their best fit, from an article written in the Cork Examiner about a previously designed house by the Cork Architects.
The brief here was to design a space for the family, retain the character of the shop front and create a connection between inside and out with the garden to the rear.
A winter garden was introduced internally, behind the shop front, not only to act as a winter garden but also as buffer to sound from the adjoining street, and to help retain heat in the main Kitchen/living quarters.

One of the occupants of this dwelling is disabled and wheelchair bound, so it was critical that every aspect of this design catered to the requirements of the disabled user. It was important that design also created a homely environment that did not feel overly clinical. The heating is underfloor and the dwelling is orientated on the site maximise the benefit of sun and light.

On a south facing site the dwelling is split level, designed to step down with the slope of the land. The Materials selected, were influenced by those used in the town for generations, but the design is contemporary, respecting the mass of neighbouring properties, while exploiting this idyllic location to the full.

Existing was a 1970’s brick built bungalow .The Clients requirements were to capitalise on the views, increase the floor space and create a warm and inviting aesthetic to the property. The solution was an extension upwards, making it a two story dwelling. The size of the garden remained intact. The smaller ground floor bedroom was sacrificed for a double height entrance hall with gallery landing and rooflights above. Where possible we worked with the existing structure for cost efficiencies. The entire was clad in natural stone and the result has transformed the clients lifestyle.

This project involved the demolition of a 1940’s Semi-detached bungalow that was in a particularly bad state of repair, replacing it with new a two storey semi. The new design compliments the adjoining semi and the row of dwellings of which it forms a part. The new semi is full of light, with a partially open plan ground floor. The new ground floor extends further to the rear and the feeling of space achieved within the new house is very surprising. It has under floor heating and achieves insulation values well above the norm.

The challenge on this sloping site was that the best views were to the north and sunshine and light, from the opposite direction. It was important to capitalise on both. The main mass of the dwelling is designed to run with the contours of the land. We choose to site the house on a relatively level area of this sloping site, minimising the cut and fill. As with traditional Irish farmhouses this dwelling is principally one room deep, but with extensive glazing to the south. Much of the south side of the dwelling has a void/double height space, enabling the sun to penetrate deep into the heart of this dwelling.

The Clients chosen site is in the middle of an open field in the Tipperary countryside. Our Concept was to create a dwelling that would harmonise with its rural setting. We reintroduced ditches following the field patterns available to us from old maps. The design of the dwelling creates a simple structure with a strong agricultural influence, with a result that positively contributes to the rural character of the area. This stone structure, is partially open plan, and all rooms have a strong connection with the outside, giving the occupants a great sense of place.

The Renovation of a large single storey dwelling in an established residential area. The building was previously used as a commercial crèche. The layout of the property therefore had to be completely re-worked. New windows, French doors and rooflights added externally to flood the house with light and provide a strong connection with the mature gardens. Internally, Glazed folding sliding doors and French doors were used to connect spaces allowing on a partially open plan interior.
